Summer Learning

Summer Learning in Our Schools

SEZP’s mission to dramatically improve educational opportunity for Springfield students is supported by our Empowerment Academy initiative. Empowerment Academies provide targeted, small-group academic intervention for students during summer, winter, and spring breaks, along with weekend academies throughout the year. Empowerment Academies are one element of a multi-tiered system of support pairing high-quality, aligned curriculum with personalized dosing of intervention and extended time on learning. Research supports the impact of this multi-faceted approach as documented in a 2016 study of turnaround efforts, namely the "acceleration academy" model of intensive, extended time on intervention, implemented in the Lawrence Public Schools.

During this challenging time, this year's Summer Empowerment Learning Academies will engage a select number of students across SEZP to work in small groups of 10 - 15 students led by Massachusetts’ best educators. Small group size and high-quality instruction will allow students to receive academic support tailored to their specific needs. It will also enable teachers to build strong relationships with students and accelerate student growth. Students will be selected based on several factors, including academic need, attendance, and social-emotional needs. Summer Empowerment Academy instructors will be selected from a highly-competitive group of educators across our schools and beyond.

The SEZP-hosted Summer Empowerment Academy will start on July 6, 2020 and culimate on August 6, 2020 and be available to students from all SEZP schools to provide academic engagement in Mathematics and ELA for students in grades 6-12. In addition, the SEZP will make available several other opportunities for students to engage in learning beyond our schools. See below for evolving options.
